The programme will seek to develop a new range & microwave applicators for the treatment of liver cancer. These applicators will use high permittivity dielectric materials to a) match the microwave power to tissue and b) encapsulate the near field of the primary radiating element within low loss material. We believe that by doing this we will substantially increase the diameter of the heated region compared to other applicator designs. We will also develop a TWT based microwave system working in the range 2 to 8 GHz which will be computer controlled and agile in both frequency and power. By controlling these parameters and using the changes in dielectric properties that occur during a treatment we can produce a controlled emulation region matched to the size of a particular tumour. We envisage two modes of treatment a) MCT in association with q surgery and surgical excision of the majority of tumour material b) minimally invasive - either laparoscopic or percutaneous. Our goal will be to develop and test applicators suitable for both of these modalities.
