This project is concerned with longitudinal vortices which probably are the most important organised structures observed in near-wall turbulent flows. Giving rise to other structures known as streaks, longitudinal vortices trigger a sequence of events leading to bursts thus contributing considerably to the generation of turbulent energy. As a result, these structures are responsible for a large share of the drag. Recently, a theory was put forward describing longitudinal vortices as certain instability modes caused by the anisotropy of the normal components of the Reynolds stress tensor. The theory agrees with experiments. This project aims at verifying the theory by direct numerical calculations' and revealing further information on the mechanism of longitudinal vortices. Full Navier-Stokes calculations will be performed for initially fully chaotic motion with zero mean but with realistic distribution of Reynolds normal stresses, and formation of coherent structures will be analysed. Since all other structures are stronger and, hence, more difficult to affect, longitudinal vortices are the natural target of turbulence control techniques. Therefore, this project will be a precursor to future work on enhancing existing methods and developing new methods of drag reduction in turbulent flows.
