Summary on Grant Application Form
Infestations of Zebra Mussels and Asian Clams cause enormous economic losses in raw industrial systems (particularly power stations) in both the UK and the United States. This project will involve investigating control methods based on the use of poisoned particles(the silver bullets ). It is believed that this will reduce the cost and environmental impact relative to methods which involve using a bulk toxin dissolved in the water system, such as chlorination systems presently in use. The aim is to use the filtering capability of the molluscs to concentrate their own poison, via delivery of the toxin in particulate form . The particulates will need to be of a size easily filtered by the mussels and coated in a food attractive to them. The project involves work on the behaviour, physiology and ecology of the mussels and methods of production on an industrial scale of appropriate silver bullets . It is a collaborative project between the departments of Chemical Enginering and Zoology in the University of Cambridge.
