Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for the establishment of a Marine Energies Technology Network (METN) under the Engineering Programme Network scheme operated by EPSRC. The basis of the proposal is a network activity which will serve both the academic and SME service sector of the offshore oil and gas business AND the emerging marine renewable energies, in particularly those involving wave and current power. The formation of the network is based on the outcomes of the Marine Foresight 'Energies from the Sea' Task Force(l) and the obvious synergies between the experience in the offshore oil and gas sector, and the needs of the emerging renewables sector. Offshore wind power is not specifically included within this proposal. There are three major components to the proposed METN activities. These are (a) an Information Service; (b) Topic Projects and (c) a Mobility/Exchange Visitor Scheme. The core membership of METN will comprise (i) the academic involvement of approximately 15 U.K. universities, (ii) the (largely SME) grouping forming the incipient wave/current marine energy trade association (Seapower Association), and other organisations, (iii) representatives of oil operators and oil/gas service companies and (iv) a relevant Government Department and Agency.
