This is an application for an FTIR spectrometer capable of polarisation modulation (PM) infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). Such an instrument is required in a number of projects that are already underway and it is therefore an urgent requirement. A common theme in these investigations is the need to determine the chemical state of organic functional groups in thin (<100A) layers on the oxide/hydroxide film at the surface of aluminium. Plasma polymer adhesion promoters, self assembled monolayer coupling agents and adventitious contamination are considered. Bond formation with the aluminium surface and changes of the interface upon environmental ageing relating to durability are also addressed. A range of analytical techniques are being applied to the surface/interface characterisation; including, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), chemical force microscopy (CFM), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and contact angle measurements. The PM-IRRAS instrument will complement the information obtained from these techniques.
