Summary on Grant Application Form
We will study the dynamics of a series of biologically relevant polymers wuth the technique of photon correlation spectroscopy. Using this method we will examine a large dynamic range for a number of novel polymeric systems; extending to the method to the new 10ns regime. Polarized light will be employed to study the rotational diffusion of the polymer chains. The data will be placed in the context of seperate X-ray, neutron, rheological and theoretical results. A series of bipolymers will be analysed: charged carbohydrates, titn, and beta tapes. Furthermore two well defined syntheticsystems displaying biological analogies will be treated: the Rayleigh charge instability, with the polyelectrolytes in poor solvents, and the motion of ionomeric micelles. the later programme will benefit from comparative studies with the developing X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy technique. Towards the end of the period, new experimental techniques for studying self-diffusion coefficients with flourescent probes will be developed. Each program links to strategic collaboration at the University of Leeds and industry.
