Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to study the surface features and growth related properties of nitride compounds and alloys. Work will begin with a zero temperature study of the surface reconstructions of unstrained cubic and wurtzite GaN and then go on to consider the effects of strain. We also wish to understand the role of surfactants during the growth process and how these may influence the form of surface reconstruction and subsequent incorporation of atomic species. The nitride alloys are of great technological interest because of the range of band gap which they span but there are significant miscibility problems. Poor miscibility is of considerable concern to growers trying to produce good quality alloy material for experiments and devices. Thus we will perform extensive calculations with a view to better understanding and to alleviate such problems. Our ultimate goal is to find conditions or strategies which might optimise the growth of these alloys, in particular Ga1nN and GaNAs. Although we expect to gain significant insight with zero temperature studies, we are also proposing to carry out finite temperature molecular dynamics calculations when these can provide important additional information.
