Summary on Grant Application Form
The problem of radiation pressure will be attacked by applying recently developed schemes of quantisation for the electromagnetic field in --and about-- dispersive dielectrics. The radiation pressure will be determined by obtaining the Lorentz force, induced by a pulses incident normally on surfaces of a dielectrics. The quantum formalism will enable the treatment of non-classical light - for example, single-photon pulses. However, the formalism will also allow classical forms of light -- for example, coherent light -- to be used. Results will be determined for the radiation pressure on the following single interfaces: single interfaces with free space; dielectric slabs in free space; mirror immersed in transparent liquids; charge -carriers in semiconductors. In each of these examples, the use of light in the form of a pulse will allow separation of the contributions from the surface of the material and its bulk. Comparison with previous theory and experiments will be used, so as to clarify the nature of the surface and bulk forces, and their relations to the various extant electromagnetic momentrum densities.
