Summary on Grant Application Form
During the past 2 years, we have applied the methods of Neutron Diffraction & Isotopic Substitution, & Quasielastic Neutron Scattering to a selection of aqueous electrolyte solutions os biological material such as proteins, polypetides & fragments of DNA. Preliminary analyses of most of the large amount of data obtained so far suggests that there exists an explicit relationship between the hydration structure of certain ions with the presence of biomolecules. A more detailed analysis is required to establish the precise nature of this effect.Prior to publication of our results we will discuss them with colleagues at other laboratories to assess their general impact on the biophysics community. NMR and IR spectroscopy will also be performed to augment our findings.Depending upon the nature of the results, future collaborative programs will be planned.
