The aim of this research is to initiate and develop the currently unknown catalytic intermolecular ortho-specific arylation of phenols. We intend to achieve this by the reversible incorporation of phenols into phosphite and phosphinite ligands that can then be activated by ortho-metalWion at an appropriate metal centre (palladium, iridium andlor ruthenium). Oxidative addition of an aryl halide or triflate to this metal followed by reductive elimination of the mexallated and non-metallated aryl residues will then form the desired 2-aryl-phend linkage. De-coordination of the ligand followed by traps-esterficafron with the starting phenol should yield the free 2-arylated phenol and allow the unreacted phenol to enter the catalytic manifold. We will screen a range of ligands and catalysts, both pre-formed and formed in situ for activity in this reaction. If necessary we will also study the possibility of 'building' the reaction from the complex up, i.e. optimise each step independently and then incorporate them into the catalytic cycle. Once the best catalysts have been identified we will concentrate on selectivity and substrate tolerance studies.
