Bifunctional catalysis can result in considerable rate enhancements and introduction of selectivity in several synthetic transformations in enzyme model systems. It is however now becoming clear, that bifunctional catalysis is not merely of interest to explain or mimic biological efficiency and rate enhancement, but is a viable design principle for the development of new molecular catalysts. This proposal involves the design, development and study of new range of generally applicable modular, bifunctional catalysts, involving the cooperative action of both a Lewis acidic and a Lewis basic site, for accomplishing a range of selective transformations, including asymmetric processes. The systems to be studied are highly adjustable, modular bifunctional catalysts containing both amino and boron functional groups, which will find applications in asymmetric catalysis. This project aims to develop a fundamental mechanistic understanding of the principles by which such systems work and to apply these systems to a range of useful known synthetic processes such as kinetic resolutions, meso-epoxide ring opening, aldol reactions, Michael additions and developing news applications such as halo-alkoxvlations and aza-Baever-Villiger reactions.
