Inherently Safer Design (ISD) aims to achieve process plant that is safe because it does not containhazards. Potential hazards are identified early and are then avoided or minimised, rather than controlled. This way accidents either cannot happen or their effects are minimal. The ChemicalEngineering Department at Loughborough has pioneered this approach and now seeks to devise a method for quantification ofinherent safety (IS) that will be used to select inherently safer and cost effective plant designs.The Fellow will help compile a questionnaire about IS and ISD for plant design companies. He will analyse the results of the questionnaire, following it up with company visits and devise a practical method for quantifying IS and linking it to economic drivers. The method will be discussed and refined at a meeting of participating companies and others.The Fellow will give impetus to a proposed multi-disciplinary Centre for Loss Prevention at Loughborough and his expertise will help other members begin or develop lines of research in the Centre.Many prestigious UK Institutions have already indicated that they would like the Fellow to visit and share his knowledge and experience.
