Summary on Grant Application Form
An unusual, reproducible switching phenomenon has been observed in films of poly-4-dicyanomethylene-4H-cyclopental[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene (PCDM) electrodeposited onto ITO substrates and completed with an aluminium counterelectrode. The effect is almost identical to that observed by workers at IBM Zurich in thin films of chromium-doped SrZrO3 sandwiched between a SrRuO3 bottom electrode and a gold top electrode and could form the basis of a solid state memory element. The proposed research programme will be directed towards (a) elucidating the microscopic process(es) giving rise to the 'memory' effect (b) optimising the effect for possible applications in memory arrays (c) determining whether the effect is light sensitive and (d) investigating whether the effect is present in soluble homologues of PCDM spin-coated onto ITO substrates. This last element of the programme will be important if the device is to be capable of integration into more complex polymer based logic circuits.
