The benefits of supercritical fluids, SCF (solvents which combine physical properties of liquids and gases) are being increasingly recognised by the pharmaceutical and chemical industries for production of high-quality and high-value substances. This processing is clean and capable of providing, in a single step process, materials with optimum solid-state properties. Advances in chemical engineering in this area are hindered by the lack of on-line analytical methods capable of monitoring the multi-phase flows in the SCF reactors. This project aims to design and build prototype sensor systems for on-line analysis of particle size and shape, fluid refractive index, and solute concentrations in SCF reactors or flow cells by collaboration between UB, bpd and BIRAL. These sensors will be tested and used for scale-up applications at bpd. In the second phase of the programme robust pre-production prototype systems will be constructed by BIRAL to provide the full benefit of fast, on-line signal processing and customised software. These developments will enable the designed sensor systems to be used in wider applications in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and analytical science.
