Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to investigate the use of pulsed inhomogeneous magnetic fields in atom optics. This technique will be used to focus a cold cloud of rubidium atoms from one vacuum chamber into another. The initial cold atom cloud will be collected in one vacuum chamber and moving molasses will be used to launch it into a vertically displaced second chamber. As atoms travel upwards, pulsed currents in circular coils will be used to achieve axial and radial focusing. The resolution of the focusing achievable experimentally will be investigated. If sufficiently fine resolution were achieved this technique would be useful for loading a spatially separated conservative atom trap. Velocity focusing of a launched cloud using pulsed inhomogeneous fields will also be investigated.
