Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent speech perception studies have demonstrated high intelligibility of narrow bands of speech. While intelligibility is highest in the F2 region, closer inspection reveals intelligibility dips in the region between Fl and F2. Perceptual experiments carried out in our lab using digit sequences indicate a dip, as does a computer model. The proposed study aims to confirm these findings via listening tests with sentence material. The study will also identify whether dips between F2 and F3, predicted by the model, occur in listeners' results. The existence of dips has implications for general models of speech perception and speech technology.
