This project is a preliminary stage in our efforts to construct effective molecular-scale photo-electronic devices. We have identified several important components that must be incorporated into the final molecular assembly but we need to develop a simple means by which to control the degree of electronic coupling along the molecular axis. In this proposal, we suggest that this control might be acquired by tuning the orientation of adjacent modules in the connector holding together the multi-component supermolecule. A strategy for systematic variation of this orientation is presented and we have outlined how selected target molecules might be synthesized. Several sets of experiment are available by which to quantify the degree of electronic communication between redox-active terminals. The final piece of information needed for successful implementation of this approach concerns determination of the geometry around the central connector. This will be done by computational methods. It should then be possible to use the derived experimental data to develop theoretical models that relate the degree of electronic coupling to the torsional angle at the central linkage. Armed with this information we should be able to design next-generation photosystems possessing a high degree of sophistication.
