Summary on Grant Application Form
Most designed experiments have two types of entity: the treatments, and the experimental units to which they are applied. Frequently both of these are structured: for example, treatments may be all combinations of some varieties of wheat with some quantities of fertilizer, while the experimental units may be plots grouped into blocks. The possible relationships between these two structures are fairly well understood (for example, do all varieties occur in every block?)However, some experiments have more types of entity. In the above example, the grain from each plot could be used to make several loaves of bread, which could then be assessed in a third type of entity, tasting sessions, which might be cross-classified by taster and time-period.The aim of this project is to formulate conditions on the relationships between three or more structures that will enable easy analysis and interpretation of such experiments.
