Summary on Grant Application Form
Conductor studies will be linked closely to the Materials Dept. programme on LPE growth (GR/R04386), and with other academic and industrial collaborators. The grain boundary limitation in VBCO conductors will be explored by specialised magnetic and transport measurements, complemented by Hall imaging of the current distribution (under GR/N29310); it will be particularly important to study the evolution of the grain boundary transport in high magnetic fields, the regime in which these conductors should be of practical importance. Microwave loss measurements will be used as another sensitive probe of grain boundary weak-Iinks. In BiSrCaCuO conductors, particular attention will be given to disorder and its impact on reduction of anisotropy (which should enhance Jc considerably); here we will develop Hall sensor micromagnetometry for local measurements on samples excised from conductors and on single crystals and segments of bulk material.Materials Dept. PG's and PDRA's will be trained in basic physical characterisation techniques, and interpretation of results. Likewise, appropriate structural characterisations (SEM, XRD, Raman, SIMS) will be made with their assistance.Conductor AC losses in substantial AC magnetic fields (as present in most engineering applications), will be studied with our novel bolo metric rig.
