The application is to support a two-month visit by Professor OM Phillips FRS to the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics, University of Cambridge. The purpose of this visit is to collaborate with Professor HE Huppert FRS and his group in Cambridge in order to develop the theory of Continuous Hydrostatic Adjustment (CHA) and to apply it to the structure and evolution of double-diffusive cell patterns, such as the Ruddick-Turner cells which develop spontaneously at the boundary between two fluid masses which are equally stratified by different species (e.g. salt and heat) with different molecular diffusivities. These patterns have been described in laboratory and field situations, but are presently understood only qualitatively. We propose to develop the appropriate mathematical framework in order to understand and evaluate the various different phenomena involved. This will result in a quantitative theory with predictive capabilities in laboratory, industrial and natural situations.
