The aim of the project is to develop a detailed mathematical model capable of accurately and efficiently simulating a dual piston pressure swing adsorption process. The model will be tested against experiment using a test rig available through our collaboration with Prof. Douglas Ruthven of the University of Maine. The adsorption columns to be used will be a parallel passage contactor, which should reduce the energy consumption of the PSA process, and a column randomly packed with pellets. The adsortpion properties of the adsorbent materials and the dynamic behaviour of the two columns will be studied independently through standard chromatographic experiments, reducing the need for arbitrary adjustments of the model parameters.Having established the validity of a working model, this will be used to determine the optimal operating conditions in the separation of C02 from the mutticomponent mixtures present in the exhaust stream of gas turbines. An economic evaluation of the process will be carried out to establish if the dual piston PSA process is competitive when compared with other separation options.This proposal is to request the computing and experimental equipment needed to carry out these tasks and provide travel funding for the collaboration with Professor Douglas Ruthven. This proposal represents Dr Brandani's first application to an EPSRC research grant and hence is being submitted under the Fast Stream scheme for newly appointed academics.
