Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of the research is to investigate and develop the use of advanced engineering and manufacturing methods in the field of surgery. The work will focus on the area of maxillofacial surgery, however, the techniques developed will highly applicable to many other areas of surgery. This programme will provide for the first time a contiguous, integrated solution, enabling data from the patient to be converted with speed, reliability and ease into CAD/CAM tools, to facilitate the manufacture of RP models, customised implants and jigs. Trials will be performed to determine the most appropriate RP technique to the used for particular surgical applications. The design and manufacturing method for customised implants and jigs will also be assessed and optimised. In addition to demonstrating the technology, the programme will provide guidelines, support by evidence based surgery from clinical studies, to ensure that the new approach is used effectively and safely in the future. This is essential to ensure adoption and commercialisation of the technology.
