Kinetic models will be derived for the combustion of char produced from the fast pyrolysis of biomass [e.g. wood] in order to design char combustors with confidence. Fast pyrolysis of biomass is a process in which biomass is rapidly heated in the absence of oxygen. Biomass is recognised as having the potential to offer a substantial contribution to the growing demand for renewable energy. Furthermore, it has long been regarded as an important future contributor to the environmental ambitions of the UK and Europe in mitigating the Greenhouse Effect. Contracts have been awarded to generate up to 85 MWe of electricity from the fast pyrolysis of biomass. For this to be economically viable the char produced will require to be burned, in some form, to generate energy for the pyrolysis or for steam raising. Experimental data will be collected from two types of small scale reactor and used to develop combustion models. The models will be tested and validated on small and pilot scale fluidised beds, which represents the combustor most likely to be used commercially.
