The work will focus on the problem L Y= lambda HY on both compact and singular intervals, where L and H are differential expressions which may not generate self-adjoint operators. We propose a comprehensive investigation of this problem. This is important in view of the fact that it provides the foundation for the study of resonances of the Schrodinger operator and also for many problems which arise in fluid mechanics, including resonances arising in wave-trapping and more classical stability problems.
