The Cambridge University Engineering Department has granted the PI sabbatical leave in the academic year 2000/2001. Dr. T. Illangasekare from the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), USA has invited the PI to participate in his research during the period of December 2000 to September 2001. Recently, the Geotechnical and Environmental Geotechnics Group at Cambridge was successful in obtaining the Joint Infrastructure Fund to build a new laboratory/facilities to study geotechnical processes in construction activities. One of the major objectives of the JIF project is to construct an intermediate scale testing facility for the investigation of the effectiveness/limitations of various in-situ remediation technologies of contaminated ground. Therefore, the primary objectives of the visit are to learn the intermediate scale testing technologies used at CSM and to transfer the knowledge to the new facilities at Cambridge. During the PI's stay in Colorado he is also planning to visit other US universities and government institutions to develop future collaboration on contaminated source remediation technologies. At the conclusion of the visit, the PI and his US collaborators will submit a joint EPSRC-NSF research proposal. To support the visit, Professor Illangasekare is providing some partial salary support and supplies for experiments. The PI is requesting EPSRC to support his travel/accommodation cost and travel fund for his two Ph.D. students to have two months study visit.
