This project concerns a new generation of self-tuning vibration absorbers for the control of structure-borne vibrations. The vibrations are regarded as waves travelling through the structure, and the aim is to either minimise the transmission of waves to vibration-sensitive regions or to absorb the energy associated with the waves. Absorber behaviour will be modelled and tuning laws and performance characteristics determined.If the disturbances have a frequency content that varies with time then the absorber will need to continuously re-tune to maintain optimal performance. This is also required to accommodate initial mis-tune. Self-tuning behaviour will be achieved in two parts. First, real-time wave sensors will be used to measure the amplitudes of the waves propagating away from the absorber. These give a cost function that the self-tuning must minimise. Secondly, smart materials will be used to allow the absorber properties to be adapted electrically -shape memory alloys and magneto-rheological fluids will be used to control stiffness and damping respectively. Integrated control will be applied so that the system as a whole is self-tuning. Such a system will be modelled analytically and numerical simulations will be performed. An experimental demonstration will be implemented for the case of control of vibration transmission.
