The purpose of the network is to generate creative ideas, undertake innovative construction research and develop a state-of-the-art knowledge base providing the backdrop for major breakthroughs in construction supply chain in the North West and beyond. The network is to bring together groups of researchers and stakeholders from the disciplines of Construction, Science, Engineering and Business. The participants share the major research objective to improve facility and infrastructure performance through encouraging best practice and innovation through the integration of design and construction processes in the construction industry within the overall context of economic and environmental sustainability. A major function of the network is to facilitate system integration. At present, systems are viewed .as being internal to the organisation, reflecting the barriers that exist between enterprises particularly in the design and construction supply chains. Systems must be extended to link the design consultants and construction enterprises together with the suppliers and subcontractors, in much the same way as insurance companies and airlines are linked with their agents and banks. The process is driven by the contractor, who encourages horizontal information flows. Such systems can strengthen innovation potential and speed up response ratios. The contractor can act as the gateway for information received from suppliers, subcontractors and international partners.
