Summary on Grant Application Form
The goal of the proposed research is to improve our understanding of the process of dynamic wetting and, in particular, the effect of 'hydrodynamic assist of dynamic wetting', that is, the influence of the flow field near the moving contact line on characteristics of wetting. The study will focus on the so-called 'curtain coating', which is of great practical importance and where the process of 'hydrodynamic assist' was observed experimentally. The proposed research is based on the following two ideas. The first is the use of a new theory of dynamic wetting, which analysis shows that at least qualitatively the effect of the flow field on the wetting characteristics is there. So far, this is the only theory which offers a description of the effect observed experimentally. The second idea is to consider the case of low Reynolds numbers and use the boundary-integral equation method to reduce the problem to that involving interface variables only. The anticipated outcome is the understanding of the physical mechanism of the flow-field influence on the dynamic contact angle and the role of controllable parameters (flow rate, contact line speed, etc). The experimental part of the research programme will involve the measurement of dynamic contact angle in order to obtain data to verify the mathematical modelling. Data will be obtained over a range of controllable parameters at the limit of low Reynolds numbers (Re<0.1).
