A program to investigate the effect of confinement on ultrafast molecular dynamics is described. Confinement can radically alter the properties of a liquid, eg shifting phase transition temperatures by many degrees. For constraint of chromophore motion by interaction with a protein matrix photophysical properties of the chromophore can be completely changed. The understanding of the microscopic origin of these effects is the goal of the current application. The new experiments utilise existing advanced laser apparatus at UEA, and build on established expertise in molecular dynamics and ultrafast spectroscopy. Applications of new and existing ultrafast laser experiments to the dynamics of liquids in nanoporous media (aerogels, sol-gels) and microemulsions are described. The measurements will represent the first coherent investigations of liquid dynamics in constrained media. The importance of the multiple experiment approach adopted here is emphasised.The ultrafast dynamics of the green fluorescent protein (GFP), of great importance in bioimaging, will be investigated. New experiments will allow the assessment of the interactions between the chromophore and the protein (and mutants), and the dynamics of the protein in the vicinity of the chromophore. As well as having important implications in bioimaging, this research also represents a new program in ultrafast biology.
