Summary on Grant Application Form
For the last two years, materials engineering groups at Swansea and University of NSW, Sydney have collaborated on the transfer of aerospace composite technology to urban transport and lightweight medical aids. These are still essentially 'high cost' applications. Clearly composite materials have many attributes that would benefit the lower cost industries if they could be produced at a more competitive price. An example is the first steps now being taken in India to produce low cost housing, and collaboration with colleagues at Trivandrum will provide the Indian perspective on composite developments. A short survey indicates that the basic elements for this transfer are available. The important breakthrough will be the integration of these elements into a global system that benefits both producers and users. Thus it is not always evident that an innovative fabrication approach at an SME in the UK could benefit the small farmer in India. The proposal seeks to remedy this limitation by undertaking a detailed world-wide survey of composite technology, and of the engineering requirements in the UK, Australia and India in particular. It is emphasised that the survey will focus specifically on middle and lowest industrial applications and will address the economic feasibility of the technology explored. On this basis, a realistic road map for the future will be developed.
