We have developed a novel non-invasive magnetic imaging technique in Bath called scanning Hall probe microscopy (SHPM) whereby a nanoscale Hall probe is used to generate quantitative profiles of the magnetic induction at the surface of magnetic materials. With the support of a 12 month 'pilot' grant from the Advanced Magnetic Programme we were recently able to improve our spatial resolution to ~200nm with very high data capture rates (up to 1 frame/s). (The successful fabrication of sensors with 100nm resolution has just been completed although these have not yet been used for imaging.) We can also correlate magnetic information with topographic data generated using an integrated STM tip. We are now proposing to set up a flexible new imaging system with a coarse x-y translation stage and triple axis field coils dedicated to the study of ferromagnetic thin films and nonostructures. Three parallel investigation themes are proposed:- A study of domain structures and reversal in ultrathin magnetic films, multilayers and nanostructures in collaboration with Dr J A C Bland (Cambridge), Prof S von Molnar (Tallahassee) and Prof A Kent (New York). A correlation of the temperature-dependent magnetic transport properties of CMR thin films in collaboration with Dr M G Blamire (Cambridge), Dr L F Cohen and Prof R A Strading (ICSTM) and Prof S von Molnar (Tallahassee). The use of static Hall probe arrays to study the real time magnetisation reversal in ferromagnetic clusters in collaboration with Dr C Binns (Leicester) and Prof A Kent (New York).
