Summary on Grant Application Form
Present day understanding of the physical processes governing turbulent combustion remains incomplete. In particular, the role of transient processes on the statistics of turbulent reacting flows has not been fully investigated. This project will address some of these outstanding issues with the continued development of wavelet based methods for the simulation of reacting flows with non-trivial chemistry. In the first instance, the project will continue the development of sophisticated wavelet methods to simulate numerically turbulent reacting flow processes. As a corollary of this development, new methods for the analysis of the coherent structures found in fully developed turbulence will be investigated.Physical phenomena such as ignition, extinction, strain and curvature will also be examined and the response of the flame structure to these stimuli will be investigated for different sophisticated chemical reaction mechanisms.
