Summary on Grant Application Form
Our work to date provides proof of concept showing how information on electronic properties of charge traps at the molecular level can be fed through mesoscopic transport simulations to predict device characterisations such as the space charge density profile. In the present proposal we wish to extend both the trap distribution calculations (using semiclassical molecular dynamics and/or Monte Carlo) and the transport model (to include for example other charge carriers) to give a more complete and accurate description of the trapping process. In this way we will construct a state-of-the-art model of space charge formation capable of predicting the distribution of space charge in realistic models of PE insulating devices. By using first principles molecular dynamics to describe local electron trapping we expect to be able to look directly at the local effect of trapped charge on the energy barriers to ageing reactions and to lay the foundations for a molecular description of the contribution of space charge to ageing processes.
