In the last 4 years I have developed the algorithm Meto Talk for the automatic resolution of metonymies, in collaboration with Prof Dr Udo Hahn at Freiburg University. Metonymies are an especially frequent form of figurative speech, where one expression stands for the standard referent of another related expression. As an example, consider The BMW was parked outside , where the name of the firm BMW stands for a car produced by the firm. Our research has shown the importance of the resolution of metonymies for automatic text understanding and subtasks like anaphora resolution and has contributed significantly to the understanding of metonymies, as shown by several papers in outstanding conferences (see case for support). We now propose to consolidate that research by authoring a paper for the journal Artificial Intelligence , one of the most prestigious journals publishing work in computational linguistics. This article will also include evaluation data by an additional experiment: we propose to run our algorithm on additional natural language texts sampled by the Computational Linguistics Research Group at Freiburg, which were previously not considered.
