Summary on Grant Application Form
Our research aim is to investigate the detailed microscopic mechanism of nucleation at the liquid-solid transition of hard spheres. Confocal microscopy will be used to directly observe the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of nucleation in a colloidal supercooled fluid of hard spheres. The radical structure of both critical and pre-critical nuclei will be directly imaged and compared with recent simulation predictions. Our experiments will enable a detailed study to be made of the microscopic mechanism by which the critical nucleus grows into a stable crystalline phase. These measurements will provide a dramatic test of the concepts of classical nucleation theory and provide qualitatively new experimental information on nucleation pathways in a simple model system.
