Both orientation and contrast cues can induce the perception of depth in human observers and can be used to represent depth and surface shape in computer graphics and virtual reality systems. An understanding of how these cues interact Is therefore of both scientific and industrial importance. Recent studies of human vision have identified independent mechanisms for processing first-order (luminance) based signals and second-order (contrast and texture) based signal.. There are however many cues that might support second-order perception. Two such cues are the local-contrast of some carrier signal and the orientation of texture elements within an image. These cues have typically been studied separately, the former as a cue for motion perception, and the latter as a cue for region segmentation. There is however a close similarly between models for the processing of the two stimulus types. Whether there is a single second-order mechanism, or multiple mechanisms one for each cue, remains an open question and is the focus of the proposed research. If close interaction is found two previously disparate strands of research can be integrated. If the two cues are processed separately this might imply multiple second-order mechanisms greatly increasing estimates of the complexity of processing in the visual system.
