Carbon nanatubes are a recently discovered material that displays an impressive list of extreme electrical, optical and mechanical properties observable from room temperature down to millikelvins. A single-wall nanatube is a really unique system to study quantum interference and electron-electron correlation effects, such as conductance quantusation and the Luttinger liquid formation. Carbon nanotubes also have a great potential for various applications that range from a single-molecule field effect transistor operational at room temperature to the development of nano-scanning instrumentation, such as nanotweezers, optoelectronics and a new type of field-emission electron sources. In view of a growing range of applications that carbon nanatubes find in instrumentation physics, a systematic study of kinetic and optical properties of this material is highly desirable. The proposed research programme includes a comprehensive theoretical analysis of three groups of questions related to: a) optical properties of nanatubes, such as the inter-subband transitions in semi-conducting and formation of excitons, b) kinetic effects related to electron-phonon interaction, such as calculation of non4inear IV characteristics and analysis of coding kinetics of metallic nanatubes overheated by current, and c) mechanisms of electron spin-relaxation in nanotubes.
