This is an emergency proposal in order to alleviate the problems connected with Dr Richards moving from the Cavendish Laboratory to King's College London in October 2000. This will mean that sometime soon in the next-academic year, my project student and I will lose access to Dr Richards' instrument which is crucial to carry out the investigations proposed in GR/M57965. Although use of Dr Richards instrument was not ideal for my lithographic proposal I was strongly encouraged by the referees and the panel to use this in order to increase cost-effectiveness. Together with the project student we have designed and assembled a coarse positioning system and dedicated optics to be integrated with the scanning head of Dr Richards (see case for support for preliminary results). Thanks to these we only need a few components in order to build a scanning head to be used in place of Dr Richards' one. If funded, we will be able to continue the studies described in GR/M57965 which includes the use of the SNOM for both manufacturing of poly(p-phenylens vinylene), PPV, based nanostructures and their characterisation. More specifically we aim at fabrication of wire-like structures for investigations of the electrical properties of conjugated polymer in the masoscopic regime. The time needed for assembly of the components will be amply recovered by full-time availability of the instrument in the rest of the project (at the moment we only have access to 20% of the operational time of Dr Richards' instrument).
