The ability to control the intensity of light in a predetermined and predictable manner is one of the most fundamental and important manipulations required for the successful integration of all-optical, electro-optical, acousto-optical and opto-mechanical devices into modern technology. One of the most important devices used to control the amplitude of optical signals is the all-optical limiter. The proposed research project is a feasibility study aimed at the preparation of solid state optical limiters which comprise of a structurally well ordered mesostructured silica matrix as a host onto which (dye) molecules with optical limiting capability (porphyrins and fullerenes) are adsorbed. Solid state optical limiters are expected to find use in the control and manipulation of optical beams used in many mordern devices. Solid state optical limiters would offer the advantage of improved optical quality, excellent mechanical and photostability and the ability to control both the path length (film or plate thickness) and dye concentration in a manner that is not possible in solution. Mesostructured silicas are excellent candidates as host matrix due to their large and uniform internal space. A further attraction is that transparent mesostructred silicas can now be easily prepared as supported or self-standing films, plates or beads.
