Bacteria have demonstrated startling capacities in adapting to a very broad range of challenging environments. The purpose of this project is to investigate and apply a number of these strategies to adaptive computational systems. A number of source ideas will be explored in this challenging and exciting project including:-Contemporary models of bacterial genomes and their expression (including hierarchical genome organisations)-Intrinsic mechanisms for variation (including a range of mutational and transpositional mechanisms)-Multi-species populations of agents with lateral (i.e. cross-species) transfer-Multiple agents for the transfer of hereditable information (e.g., other bacteria and phages)-Challenging environments in which simulations take place and evolutionary processes proceed.
