A new approach to the problem of adaptive non-linear filtering is proposed that avoids both the problems of combinatorial increase in problem size and model selection associated with series expansion methods, and the difficulties associated with more parsimonious neural network solutions, such as false optima in multi-layer Perceptrons and centre selection in radial basis function networks. The approach is based around Mercer kernels in the framework of the support vector methodology. However, the need in that methodology to solve large-scale mathematical programmes is also avoided, resulting in simple iterative schemes. The ideas generalise the central (LMS) algorithm of adaptive filtering to an arbitrarily non-linear device. Thus far three main theoretical problems have been identified. The solution of these and the demonstration of the efficacy of the algorithms in decision and control applications, both in terms of accuracy and computational speed form the topic of this proposal.
