Designs for extrusion dies are largely a black art practised by people who have developed their expertise over a period of time. As the required forms for extrusions and subsequent shaping become more complex the experiential knowledge becomes less useful and secondly as personnel leave the company their knowledge often goes with them. Understanding the design rules for extrusion die design with input from current designers, experimental and process simulation work will help to alleviate these two problems as well as strengthen the capability of extrusion manufacturers to expand into new markets.The aim of the project is to develop a detailed understanding of the process of designing extrusion dies for aluminium extrusion so as to be able to predict the performance and optimum methods for producing aluminium extrusions. This will improve productivity and enhance the ability of companies to predict the costs of extrusion.The research is interdisciplinary and will enhance strong interaction among numerical simulation, experimentation and geometric reasoning techniques. The work undertaken at Swansea University will focus on using Medial Axis Transformation as a tool for geometric reasoning. This will be complemented by the Finite Element modelling and experimental research undertaken in the University of Birmingham.
