Summary on Grant Application Form
EPSRC funding of `Liquefying Confining Gallium: a New Material for Photonics' has allowed us to study the optically induced phase transition and associated nonlinear optical properties of this promising material structure. In the course of this research we have found that it has a combination of unique nonlinear -optical characteristics, in particular its spectral response spans from the visible to the infrared. We now take advantage of a recent dramatic drop in the price of tuneable optical parametric oscillator systems, and apply for a very cost effective continuation and expansion of the research program. We suggest a detailed spectroscopic study, in the spectral range from 410nm to 2400nm, of the optical nonlinearities of nanoscale gallium films (in particular prepared by UHV MBE) interfacing with silica and several semiconductor materials. The project promises to provide important data on the mechanisms of gallium's nonlinearity and the highcontrast switching characteristics of various novel gallium/semiconductor interfaces.
