The work in this proposal represents a new generic area of antenna research. This work package to be described here, represents a major extension to the concepts currently used in the development of low cost beam steered arrays which are polarisation agile and which, if required, can function as a direct baseband data to millimeter-wave PSK modulator. This is to be achieved using an integrated solution which is compatible with silicon processing technology. Beam formation and other control functions are executed under dc control of diode properties, and no additional r.f. components such as conventional phase shifters are required. Consequently a broad variety of low cost/mass/complexity creative solutions for commercial and military applications become available. These include beam-steered sensors, electronically controlled beam-steered antenna for broadband mobile communications applications, imaging sensors and active radar cross-section (RCS) control, as well as direct spatial dc to microwave signal phase encoding. By going via an MIC demonstrator to full MMIC integration on Silicon, and, by creating novel beam-steered reflect-array antenna structures we wish to exploit integrated low cost high performance wafer scale integrated silicon antenna arrays in order to create new levels of functionality not previously available. We wish to develop a systematic design philosophy, fabrication process, and to quantify the operation of each demonstrator building block to be constructed in this work, and to evaluate the beam steering capability of each reflect-array type. In addition we wish to identify any operating limitations of these structures and optimise the most promising structures with regard to deployment in, asset tracking, mm-wave broadband communications applications.
