The proposed research is based upon the development of new technologies that enable the patterning of surfaces into (sub) 50 nm features with well-defined chemistries. We will fabricate elastomeric stamps with nanometer sized surface relief features using state-of-the-art nanolithographic techniques such as focused ion beam lithography and e-beam lithography. These stamps can, inked with aminodendrimers, contact print (sub)-50 nm features on Si substrates. Because of the nature of the 'ink' (high molecular weight dendrimers) we will be able to print features with high resolution. The amino groups on the surface of the dendrimers that take no part in the binding to the surface can subsequently be reacted with a range of different molecules. We intend to study chemical reactions between amines and (fluorescent) molecules containing isocyanates, acid chlorides, anhydrides, etc. This will allow us to convert the printed nanopattems into ultrasmall luminescent spots, hydrophobic-hydrophilic surfaces, or adhesion points for biological entities (cell, proteins, viruses).
