Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to carry out a feasibility study to see if it is possible to understand the internal evolution of a granular medium as it is guided through a plane-strain path, in the light of recent developments in evolving heterogeneous continua. To that end datasets, that are generated by numerical simulations of granular media, are compared with analytical calculations of structures formation for anisotropic heterogeneous materials.Large-scale numerical simulations will be generated at Surrey University. The output of these will be subjected to a statistical analysis to detect structures at Kingston University. It will then be possible to make the identification of a granular medium with a non-homogeneous continuum by directly comparing numerical simulations of granular media with analytical calculations of structures formation. It is expected that this procedure will lead to the prediction of the response of a granular assembly as well as its evolution and that quantitative statements can be made.
