Water systems and their operation are becoming increasingly complex as resources diminish, and as economics, sustainability and environmental impact become important objectives. In consequence, more innovative and effective techniques for modelling, engineering and managing water systems will be required for many years to come. The Centre aims to fulfil a real need for both fundamental and applied research into water systems engineering. In pursuit of this aim, there are three key areas that the Centre considers to have great potential for long-term research, and which the Centre feels ideally suited to handle due to the experience and expertise that has been developed among its research team: (1) clean water systems (planning, design and operation), (2) wastewater systems and environmental management, and (3) intelligent decision support technologies. To plan and engineer the best possible water systems for present and future demands whilst meeting all economic and environmental objectives, requires new methods and tools. At a fundamental level, an understanding of the ways in which systems behave and are modelled is essential. Also the basic mathematical tools for analysis and optimisation require re-evaluation, as problems become larger and more difficult. Alongside this, the development of practical and robust software that applies these techniques to real situations is also required. The Centre therefore firmly believes that research into water systems engineering is a very worthwhile and long-term activity.
