This proposal seeks funding to study the spectrum and dynamics of correlated excitations and complexes formed within the electron-hole gas in semiconductors. The complexes formed include excitons and biexcitons, and mechanisms influencing the formation and stability of such excitations include direct Coulomb interactions and exchange interactions. The presence of these excitations induces changes in the optical spectrum of the semiconductor so the composition and dynamics of the correlated gas can be investigated efficiently using ultrafast nonlinear optical techniques.Recent advances in experimental techniques have already provided new, detailed information on Coulomb-correlations in semiconductors. However, the current theoretical understanding of such correlations is very limited. Using in-house data already available, and the further information provided by the newer studies outlined above, this programme also seeks to provide a consistent theoretical framework for the understanding of effects such as exciton and biexciton energy shifts, excitonic phase-space filling and thermalisation.
