The purpose of the project is to model Cell Assemblies. Although there is evidence of their existence in the brain, CAs can not currently be effectively measured in living organisms. Consequently, computational models playa particularly important role in understanding CAs.We will initially explore models of CAs to solve simple categorisation problems. These CAs should 1. be based on biologically valid neural models, 2. be based on biologically valid network topologies, 3. be learned in an unsupervised manner adhering to neurally valid learning mechanisms, 4. remain active for roughly 5 seconds (500 neural activation cycles), and 5. function in competition with other CAs in a large network. We will also work on metrics for CA presence and strength.After the initial CA model is consolidated, we will begin more advanced studies on interaction of CAs and using CAs in a real world application. Cognitive studies will include the use of CAs in hierarchies, variable binding and rules. The immediate real world application of document categorisation will also be explored.
