Summary on Grant Application Form
Waste stabilisation ponds, of which there are over 2500 in France and over 1100 in Germany but only around 30 in the UK, are an excellent candidate for wastewater treatment for small rural communities in the UK. There are, however, doubts as to their ability to remove ammonia to consent levels in winter. In this feasibility study we will monitor our existing pilot-scale facultative ponds and new maturation ponds, with particular attention to ammonia removal at low temperatures. We will also investigate the performance of graded rock/gravel filters and macrophyte channels for BOD and SS removal and also for N removal.
